DSLRs are being discontinued. Mirrorless is the future — but does that mean you should buy one today? Honest answer for beginners and enthusiasts.
The camera industry has made its decision: mirrorless is the future. Canon, Nikon, and Sony have all stopped developing new DSLR bodies. But does that mean you should buy mirrorless today?
The honest answer
Yes — if you're buying new, buy mirrorless. The reasons are practical, not theoretical.
Why mirrorless wins in 2025
Autofocus on modern mirrorless cameras is dramatically better than any DSLR at the same price. Eye-tracking, subject detection, and real-time tracking have moved from professional tools to entry-level features.
The electronic viewfinder shows you exactly what the final image will look like before you press the shutter. Exposure, white balance, depth of field — all previewed in real time. For beginners, this feedback loop accelerates learning significantly.
Video on mirrorless is also a generation ahead. If there's any chance you'll shoot video, mirrorless is the clear choice.
When a DSLR still makes sense
If you already own Canon EF or Nikon F mount lenses, a used DSLR body can be a smart way to use that glass without buying new. The image quality of a used Canon 5D Mark IV or Nikon D750 is still excellent for stills.
Battery life on DSLRs also remains superior. If you shoot in remote locations and can't charge regularly, a DSLR's 800–1000 shot battery is a genuine advantage.
The verdict
Buy mirrorless. The only exception is if you already own a significant collection of DSLR lenses — in which case, use them until you're ready to transition.
